193 Documentaries & Countries – Eritrea

Some say Rugby first appeared on the British Isle, others may say it’s either a Greek or Roman sport. In this country something similar to Rugby has been around for a long time. Tribesmen used to play a game know as “Korso” in order to solve disputes, the game is not only similar to Rugby but in many ways much more spectacular since there are very few rules and limitation. So what type of Rugby ball are these tribesmen playing with? Way cooler than normal ones, a ball made out of palm leafs! Are there any time or space limit then? Oh no no. This game can continue for hours and requires a great deal of stamina from the players. Normally the winners will be chosen at sunset. Korso seems to be a fantastic sport made by the very creative people from Eritrea.

Values in Life and on the Road

Values In Life Helps Us to Prioritize

We are soon leaving again, this time for Singapore and Malaysia and decided to write down our values in life. Travels are thrilling, help to get new ideas, experience another society and get a glimpse of the world. We also want a life full of meaning, so we need to include more of our shared interests and values abroad too. We are looking forward to spending time in nature, join social events, making new friends and engage in the place where we are.

Our 10 Most Important Values

The list is a simplified and meant to be easy to follow. Like with minimalism, cutting out the fluff helps to get more time and focus on what’s important. We still need to go back and check the list now and then as a reminder and take action in line with values.

1. Contribute More to What’s We Care About

We want to be a part of helping to create a better future even though it is just in small ways. One one of my birthdays, Chris fundraised money for the donkey’s in Morocco as a present. Ever since I saw the situation the donkey’s faced, I wanted to do something. Chris action was heartwarming and felt so right.

For Elin, the closest thing to the heart is to help animals and also raise awareness about their situation. Chris has the same feeling towards environmental issues. We both try to support each other in contributing more to these areas.

We try to contribute in more areas and in different ways, from volunteering, lending money on Kiva to feeding stray dogs, donate clothes and much more. The world can sometimes feel a bit dark, so doing something good makes it feels better.

2. To Live a Fun and Creative Daily Life

We always feel happier when we can be curious and explore new things. For us, this can be any activities that include having a fun, exciting and creative life. It can be to try out new interests, send the letter in a bottle, geocaching, upcycling, create new imaginary worlds. By purpose, we want to seek out the more unknown and obscure perspectives. It is about staying curious to have exciting experiences. Traveling and discover other countries, like India, Malaysia, Singapore, is something really love.  We aim to keep traveling and exploring more, join festivals, new years celebrations since we love to learn about different countries and cultures.

3. Connecting with Nature

We have always loved nature and want to give more priority to do activities related to nature. Nature has so much to offer us like giving us better well-being, less stress, and more harmony. There are also so many wonders and kinds of life to discover. We would like to add more nature experiences for example visit rainforest, go hiking, kayaking and see different animals. In total, we want more nature-oriented activities.

4. Have Good Relationships, Make New Friends and Staying in Touch

Relationships affects us more than anything. Friends, families and  pets all have a important influence on our life and happiness. We want to have give enough time and love for the onces that are close to us. And we want  to be social both home and on the road, making new friends and join social events.  In the end, the people from travels are the ones we remember the most from the trip.  We created a list with social messenger apps to use in different countries. We want to make sure to take enough time to meet friends and also be better at staying in touch during travels.

5. Be independent

Independence can mean a lot of different things. For us, it’s to be able to be more independent in our life related to the society we live in. That means finding new and creative ways of being semi-nomads and how to solve housing. If we don’t go for a tiny house, we would need to find another alternative solution that’s equally good.

6. Making Mini-Experiments

We want to focus on creating mini experiments and try out new areas we would like to explore. It is hard to know things without trying them, finding ways to try out and see what works feels right. This approach can help lead in the right direction and to set priorities. Mini-experiment feels like a great way to grow, try new ideas and areas.

7. Personal Growth and to Inspire Each Other

“If we don’t change, we don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we aren’t really living.”
-Gail Sheehy

This quote describes’s our viewpoint of personal growth, we want to discover more colors of life. We grow when facing challenges, trying different things, and get perspectives. Some of our challenges we choose, other we have to tackle. Having a growth mindset is useful in all situations.

An Active Life Creates Good Opportunities to Learn

Travels help us understands more about our values in life. To be in another culture helps to question how we currently live and also inspires us. There are always ways to upgrade and to develop in different areas of life.

Reading is so peaceful and gives many new ideas. Having a great discussion and then reflect makes it more clear on how to change and then put it into practice. I love journaling; it helps to connect to values and reflect on what’s going on and why. Meditation is also a great tool to zoom out, understand more about our thoughts and practice to let go.

As a couple, we share many values, interest, and goals. We try to give each other space to grow and don’t have a fixed picture of each other. A person is in constant change, and this is good to know and accept. We do our best to encourage each other, and we talk a lot:). No one is perfect, and we both lack understanding and energy sometimes, but we try our best. In total, we do talk a lot about what’s valuable for us, for each of us and why.

8. Keep Learning and Stay Curious

Being curious and never stop learning is an excellent approach to life and makes it more fun. There are so many things to learn about and discover. Kids are curious, this often tend to decrease with age, but luckily that is not always the case. We want to have curiosity as a important value in life, to keep learning and explore new areas.
To learn more about the world and itś countries we started to watch short videos from each country.

9. Minimalism – Less is More

values in life- minimalismPhoto Cred: Pexels

Minimalism is ever-present still it’s something we have to remind ourselves about again and again. We don’t carry or own many things but when a urge for something we have to question it. Do we need this? What will it add? How much extra effort and time does it take, like repairs, charging, related to how much the benefits it gives?

In general, we focus on experience and the value that gives us. Minimalism is about finding and choosing whats important and remove the rest. This is a never-ending yet rewarding process.

10. Prioritize Health

values in life- wellnessPhoto Credit: congerdesign

Eating healthy can be tricky on the road and even more so being a vegetarian. We always have this as a focus, and try our best to find solutions. Restaurants often offer vegetarian options, but many times dishes don’t contain enough nutrition. Having an own kitchen is the best solution but not always possible. When we don’t have a kitchen,  we try to complement with eating snacks like nuts, protein bars, and fruits.

At home, things are less complicated, and we try to eat a lot of whole food. Of course, we both love pancakes, chocolate and such now and then.

Food is related to our mood, performance, and health, so we want to eat as much healthy food as possible. And of course, find ways to add more exercise like long walks, going on hikes, cycle and so on. For us, it’s essential that we have the energy and health to take on adventures and not feel limited:)

This is our list of values in life for now. This is a guideline how we want to and strive to act. Over time we might add or change the list depending on our values.

If you where to write your values and focus areas in life, what would that be?

Mini-Experiment With Baozi Tasting

To start the new year of we decided to also start many new projects and min-experiments. One of our grand projects can be found here 193 Documentaries & Countries and we have of course many others to come. But first we like to introduce something opposite of new, here is something very old actually. This is a start of a series of not only old but much beloved mini-experiments from past. You are much welcomed to dig in to our own Chinese Baozi tasting from back in 2013, when we decided it would be a great idea to show the world the magic of our favorite bun from China. This experiment was all about bringing some light to Baozi, telling you which ones are good, and showing you how different they all look and taste. Here we go!

Baozi 1, The Vanilla Bun
2-Ante: This sweet vanilla bun had a good feeling to it but no real character. Still not bad! Rating: Smooth 2/5

Looked somewhat healthy but actually it was not, its really sweet and slimy. This is a Baozi with yellow cream and good taste though, Something like a vanilla donut!
Rating: Strong 3/5

Baozi 2, The Square Yellow Zebra
T3hick cake in layers with yellow and white, something like ehum.. A yellow zebra!

A cake without sweetness really!
Ratings: 2/5

Makes me think about the first Baozi but not nearly as good, sweet but not as sweet and no filling, it’s mostly just a dry cake. Nothing I would buy again! Raiting: Weak 2/5

193 Documentaries & Countries – Belgium

When thinking of Belgium we often think of the the country of chocolate and odd beers. And of course there is Brussels, the headquarter of European politics.

Something we didn’t know of is the UFO wave between 29 November 1989 to April 1990. You may read more about it here.
It seems to have been a big deal back in the day with lots of observation and even involved engagement from the Belgium military.
If UFO exists or not is another discussion, in any case this short documentary are worth watching.

Mini Experiment With Vegan Yogurts

This week we have decided to try out more of the vegan yogurts and diary free shakes. We are still vegetarians but want to cut down as much as possible on diary products and we know already try to buy more and more oatmilk or soymilk or the ones with chocolate flavor.

We tried a soygurt strawberry and also two kinds of oatgurt with blueberry and vanilla taste. On top of that, we had two shakes with mango and blueberry both made of oat.

The one with the best taste was without a doubt the strawberry yogurt. The texture and the taste were very similar to regular yogurt and compared to the other yogurt it has a bit higher percent of fat and sugar but also of protein.
Oat yogurt had the mild a bit creamy taste from oat that is also possible to taste in oat milk, the biggest downside was the probably the texture that needed a bit stiring to be ok. Nutritionwise it was more similar to an ordinary yogurt but fatter. The shakes were quite similar to drinkable yogurt and a good option for catching up with something while being on the run.

This itself, it’s a process of eating more of the kind of food we want to eat. We love fruit and veggie and want to be more updates of different new options that out there. We also started to drink a lot of smoothies again, something we use to do a lot before. The problem has been that is more difficult to continue with that during travels, it’s not worth buying a new smoothie maker for all places we go to. Now, we have found a solution and ordered a portable smoothie maker:). Hopefully, it will lead to lots of tasty smoothies along or further travels!

Resources for 2016

We thought we should share some resources for things we love and that could benefit someone else too:) First off, we want to share the resources we use to plan our lives and set goals.
We haven’t shared with so many people on how we plan our lives and how we work with goals so we thought it’s about time. Many people know us like very spontaneous people and that is also true. However to be spontaneous, we often create and come up with lots of alternatives and choose the alternatives that we like and is related to our values.

For yearly review and goal setting, we use Chris Guillebeau’s template
We just found a great new Productivity Planer with very similar approach how we like to work, with one to three major focus and with Pomodoro Technique and weekly reviews. Elin has used the 5 minutes journal for a long time which is created by the same guys as the productivity planner. Both are really worth to check out:)

Our fundraising for Donkeys:)

Last year when we went to Marocco we had a great time exploring the country and get to know lots of new people. One of the negative sides was to see how animals were treated. Our friend, who is local and lives there, told us there is a really bad situation for the animals and many people don’t care about the animals at all and abuse them. It was so hard for us to see as animal lovers. We bought food for the cats and dogs but felt we wanted to help out more. The worst situation was probably for the donkeys, they had to carry way too heavy carries long days and had lots of scars, were very thin and really sad eyes from the brutal treatment.

Many people who buy a donkey is really poor and don’t care about the animals lives. We couldn’t stop thinking about the donkeys and that we wanted to do something for working donkeys in general so when Elin had her birthday Chris started a fundraising among family and friends to support and help the donkeys. We choose an organization called Donkey Sanctuary and works with helping donkeys in regions they need help. It feels better to be able to do something small and take action for something that we would like to change.

193 Documentaries & Countries – Fiji

We have been to countless of markets around the world and yet seldom we considered how far the vendors been commuting only to get there to sell their products. This is obviously a problem for many people living in remote places around the world, and for some places in Fiji this is true too. This documentary gives some light for a village called Nasau and this based of a UN project on how to improve the situation for the women enduring harsh condition only to be able to sell their products. After see this film we’ll definitely consider vendors moren and further our investments in charity and micro finance organisations such as Kiva.

193 Documentaries & Countries – Andorra

Andorra is an interesting and a very small country. Being so small it also means there a limited amount of videos on Youtube. We decided to see a video on winter sports in Andorra since that was what we found when we sorted out documentaries on Andorra’s size or general “travel to Andorra” documentaries.

Chris really love skiing and seeing this documentary grow his wishes to ski soon again. We also learn something pretty cool we didn’t hear about before the sport is known as speed flying. Who would have guessed that you could combine skiing and jumping off steep slopes in Andorra?
Well, not us!

Doing Something For Others

giftChristmas and New years have been great and we have spent lots of time with family and friends. Christmas time is also normally a time where we give each other gifts to show affection and that we care.

A great gift, that we both have got, is to support Kiva and become a lender of a microloan. Kiva focus empowers people by lending out money. It is without returned interest and rather an act of doing something for others and help to change people’s lives:). The money from the loan can help to start a small business and give someone a chance for change.

We started with lending out money through Kiva last year and already got the money back. We have been able to reuse the money it and support a new person which feels pretty amazing!

By the time,  we hope to help people from around the world to be able to create a better life. Maybe it’s not that big, but it makes a difference for at least one person.
